Is Working from Home making me Depressed?

Are you one of the 9 million Americans that currently work primarily from home? According to the US Census, work-from-home positions tripled between 2019 and 2021, and nearly 18% of Americans are currently employed and work-from-home positions (1).

Work-from-home employment can have some major advantages including cutting out commute times, greater ability to spend time with family, and greater flexibility with childcare, amongst others. but there are a few drawbacks that need consideration.

So what does the research say about the connection between working from home and mental health?

In 2021, a study published in the journal of occupational health noted The worsening of depression symptoms in individuals with previous depression to switch to a work-from-home setting. (2)

An additional study published in 2022 in the BMC public health journal confirmed his findings noting that work-from-home positions were associated with the worst thing of depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, and overall feelings of isolation and loneliness. (3)


So why are work-from-home positions associated with increased depression? 

There may be several different contributors to the increase of depression that is noted for individuals who are employed and work from home positions, and researchers have started to investigate the contributing factors to this phenomenon.

Some of the most significant findings associated with physical and mental health decline and work-from-home positions include:

  • An overall decrease in physical activity or lack of movement throughout the day

  • A decrease in nutrient-dense diets: increased snacking, or general poor nutrition

  • A  lack of social connection or communication with coworkers

  • Balancing multiple responsibilities of both work-related tasks and caregiving responsibilities (for young children or aging parents) 

  • An increased level of distraction at home (4)

So what can be done to make a work-from-home position more healthy for those who struggle with depression?

We are glad you asked! With a little extra intentionality, a work-from-home position can be a great option despite struggling with mental health concerns. Here are a few things to keep in mind in order to make your work-from-home position an asset rather than a hindrance to your mental health journey. 

  • Create a consistent routine and schedule

  • Take scheduled breaks throughout the day

  • Stay in consistent communication with coworkers, colleagues, and supervisors

  • Exercise regularly and prioritize moving throughout the day

  • Prioritize healthy nutritious lunches 

  • Set boundaries between work and home responsibilities 

  • Seek professional help from a trained therapist, or medical professional
